Gillas Lane Primary Academy and Nursery

Proud to be part of Aim High Academy Trust

Attendance

Attendance figures are checked daily and a variety of initiatives

encourage full attendance and good punctuality.

The school  participates in the Every School Day Counts scheme.

Certificates are given for individual 100% attendance.

If your child is going to be absent from school it is your responsibility to inform the office before 9.30 in the morning. You need not phone on a daily basis but we would request a letter of explanation when your child returns as the school has a statutory obligation to provide a reason for absence.

If your child has been sick or has diarrhoea  we have been advised that they should not return to school until they have been clear for 48 hours.

If your child has a contagious condition such as impetigo, chicken pox or measles he or she must be kept at home until the rash/spots are dry. Other contagious conditions can be looked up on the Internet. The link below recommends how long children should remain at home following contageous illness.

The only medicines we are allowed to give are ones which are medically prescribed by a doctor. Parents must fill out a Permission to Administer Medication form and the medication must be labeled by a pharmacy. We cannot administer over the counter medicines. Due to the sensitive nature we cannot administer eye or ear drops/ointments.

Attendance at Gillas Lane Primary has always been rated good with attendance figures being higher or similar to those nationally.  Last year there was a dip in the percentage of overall attendance to 93.9%.  The school was hit by a severe sickness bug in December 2012 and January 2013 and this hugely affected overall attendance with absence through illness counting for 4.1% of the schools overall absence figure.

Holidays during Term Time:

Admissions Policy

If you are choosing a Primary school we are happy to meet with possible new parents and children but, to make sure there is someone free to see you, it is best to telephone first.

Admissions to our Nursery class are dealt with in school.  Parents should register their child for a place shortly after the child’s second birthday – please call at the school’s main office bringing with you the child’s birth certificate and proof of your current address, e.g. utility bill etc.

Children can join the Reception class at the beginning of the school year in which they will be 5.  Admissions for Reception class are dealt with by the City of Sunderland’s Admissions Team.  If there are more applicants than there are vacancies, the Council allocates places using the following criteria:

  • Children with siblings already in school
  • Children with special needs that would be best catered for at Gillas Lane Primary
  • Distance by foot between home and school

For admission to school in later years, please contact the school’s main office who will give assistance with this.

If you require a place for Secondary School or Primary School in September 2014 then please follow this link to apply online:  http://www.sunderland.gov.uk/admissionsonline
