Advice from a tree
Gillas Lane Primary Academy’s aim is to improve the life chances of all children through providing a caring, positive and stimulating environment, in which children feel supported as individuals and are able to achieve their very best.
We strive to develop well rounded, confident and responsible individuals who aspire to achieve their full potential.
We do this by providing a welcoming, safe and supportive learning environment, which is underpinned by our 3 curriculum drivers – Raising Aspirations, Rich Vocabulary & Mental Health & Wellbeing.
At Gillas Lane, we want all of our children to gain a deeper understanding into their personal, social, emotional and mental health needs. Therefore, our PSHE curriculum enables children to build skills, attitudes, self-esteem, resilience and confidence across the school. We know that personal, social, emotional and mental health development is crucial for children to lead happy and healthy lives.
Long Term Plan
Our Long Term Plan is bespoke to Gillas Lane; we know our children and families well.
PSHE Progressive Milestones in Disciplinary Learning
Our PSHE Milestones contain the disciplinary knowledge needed to understand key concepts in personal, social, health, and emotional development. Our mid-term planning specifies the substantive knowledge children will learn.
Disciplinary Knowledge – Thinking Like a Responsible Citizen
When thinking like a responsible citizen, children learn to reflect, empathise, and make informed choices. They consider:
- Self-awareness – understanding personal strengths, emotions, and identity
- Relationships – recognising respectful behaviour, empathy, and communication
- Decision-making – exploring choices, consequences, and personal responsibility
- Health & Wellbeing – considering physical and mental health, safety, and self-care
- Community & Diversity – valuing different perspectives, cultures, and shared responsibilities
- Rights & Responsibilities – understanding fairness, rules, and democratic values
- Value & Appreciation – developing respect for themselves, others, and the world around them
Substantive Knowledge – Understanding PSHE
Knowledge about personal development and society:
- The work of key individuals and role models (current, historical, local, and international)
- How ideas about health, relationships, and citizenship have changed over time
- The role of PSHE in helping children understand themselves and others in a changing world
Knowledge about elements of PSHE (themes, skills, and concepts):
- Health and wellbeing: physical health, mental wellbeing, and personal safety
- Relationships: friendships, families, respect, and communication
- Living in the wider world: rules, responsibilities, diversity, and economic understanding
