Vocabulary at Gillas Lane

At Gillas Lane Primary Academy, Rich Vocabulary is one of our key drivers. We understand that a strong, well-developed vocabulary underpins success in reading, writing and across the wider curriculum. To ensure every child can confidently understand and use new content, we teach vocabulary explicitly, consistently, and in meaningful contexts.

Each new word is introduced alongside a child‑friendly definition, an example of the word used in a sentence, and a visual representation to support understanding. This consistent structure helps pupils grasp meanings quickly and remember with frequent practise.

Dedicated Vocabulary Lessons

Every week, pupils take part in a standalone, explicit vocabulary lesson:

·  Tier 2 Word: Each year group learns one high‑value Tier 2 word taken from our curated list of ten key words for the year.

·  Non-Core Vocabulary: Pupils learn a second word linked to their non-core learning that week.

Vocabulary in Non-Core Subjects

To help pupils access and succeed in their wider curriculum learning, vocabulary is explicitly taught at the beginning of every non-core lesson. This ensures our children are equipped with the key language needed to understand new concepts, discuss their learning and articulate themselves clearly.

Vocabulary in Reading

Within every reading lesson, we teach vocabulary directly from the text being studied. This helps children experience new words in rich, authentic contexts and strengthens their comprehension and language skills.

Vocabulary in Writing

For each writing unit, teachers explicitly teach three Tier 2 words at the start of the writing outcome. These high-utility words support children to produce ambitious, precise and effective writing.

Vocabulary Retrieval

To ensure long-term retention, previously taught vocabulary is regularly revisited through retrieval sessions. This practice strengthens pupils’ ability to recall, understand and apply words confidently across all many different contexts.
