British Values at Gillas Lane

"We are far more united and have far more in common than that which divides us..."  Jo Cox MP

At Gillas Lane Primary Academy, British Values are taught to help children understand how to live and learn together in a respectful and safe community. The school teaches values such as democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty,  mutual respect and tolerance so pupils learn to treat others fairly and appreciate different beliefs and backgrounds. By learning these values, children develop important social skills, understand the importance of rules, and feel confident sharing their ideas.

We explicity teach British Values every week on a Wednesday because teaching British Values helps prepare pupils at Gillas Lane to become responsible, respectful members of society.

Protected Characteristics

At Gillas Lane Primary Academy, children learn about protected characteristics to help them understand that everyone is different and deserves to be treated fairly and with respect. Teaching this helps pupils recognise that people may have different ages, beliefs, abilities, families, or backgrounds, and that these differences should be valued.

By learning about protected characteristics, children develop kindness, empathy, and respect for others. This helps create a safe and inclusive school environment where everyone feels accepted and valued.
